Shockwave therapy

Shockwave therapy, or extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is an evidence based treatment modality used for managing tendon pain (often referred to as tendinitis or tendinopathy) as well as other conditions affecting the body. The use of shockwave therapy is supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). The term “extracorporeal” indicates that the treatment is performed externally.

The main goals of shockwave therapy are to alleviate pain and restore normal function. Shockwave therapy is an appropriate treatment for option for:

  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Calcific tendinopathy
  • Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis)
  • Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS)
  • Patellar tendinopathy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Proximal hamstring tendinopathy
  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
  • Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome)
